It is astounding how when something smells off it doesn't really matter if it is in a javascript program, a PHP function or a UX specification - once I get the scent and start tearing away the layers invariably some underlying oversight or downright dumb-ass assumption surfaces. The earlier in the process this happens, the better. The worst time is when it is production and something keeps not working right...
