Michaela Savell is a Boston-based visual artist who paints colorful, impressionist landscapes with acrylic paint on wood panel or paper that bring diverse cultures into your home. She creates Boston landmarks, New England favorites, and travel landscapes that add both visual depth through saturated colors and a touch of whimsy. Her favorite commissions include handpainted album artwork, and has worked with TopHouse (a folk band) and Sam Burchfield (a singer-songwriter) in designing their album covers. Along with albums, Michaela offers illustrated merch designs and tour posters.

Affinity DesignerThe folk, singer-songwriter band TopHouse commissioned me to create a hand-painted single album cover for the acoustic version of their greatest hit, “The Mountain Song”. Joe was looking for a bluebird with a wildflower crown, and the swoop of the mountain to match their logo in the background. We worked together on composition and cropping the original for digital production, to get the best view of the bluebird and its crown.
“It Was Worth It” was a collaborative single project between folk singer-songwriters Sam Burchfield and TopHouse. I gave a consultation to both bands, getting visual direction from the song about how they were looking for a colorful, springtime-feeling piece. After multiple rounds of sketches, we landed on the album art being a wildflower field at sunset after a rainstorm, where you can see footprints along the garden path. I created the high-res digital files for Spotify and Apple Music, sent out the original piece, and added complimentary social media post designs of the album art.
Create hand-painted illustrations for folk and bluegrass musician clients such as TopHouse and Sam Burchfield; paint custom Boston landscape paintings for residential clients; sell original landscapes and prints at the Boston Public Market, The Well (Boston), Cafenation (Brighton, MA), and 5+ other stockists.
Spearheaded the CVS app redesign via the home screen and notification center; created a desktop and mweb version of discount tools while using SAFe practices; updated CVS’s design system from Sketch to Figma, where I partnered with a11y to create WCAG-compliant components, designed our illustration strategy, and established app direction with leadership; presented to executive leadership a digital-first vision for Pharmacy that leveraged web, SMS, app, kiosk, and in-person interactions; and UI QAed for client white-label projects, working with Product-run scrum teams.
Led the UX, UI, and prototyping for client calculators and HVS’s flagship advisor software. I created HVS’s design system from scratch, building out best dev practices, icon libraries, colors, typography, and digital illustrations. I also rebranded HVS and its child companies’ web design.
