As part of a program of study, every graduate of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design completes a “thesis”, or capstone, project to round out their senior year. The project itself is entirely open-ended, allowing students to turn their own personal art interests into a fully-realized concept. For my project, I wanted to create something that showed off both my illustration and graphic design skills to their fullest potential, while creating a large amount of assets that all work together as one project.
I created OwlBox, a science subscription box for kids, that introduces kids to fields of science. For the project I created a fully illustrated mailer box, a fold out poster, a sticker sheet, two cover designs for a field guide & plant press, an activities booklet fully explaining 5 science activities, and 6 additional worksheets. All of the pieces utilize a brand system I created, which include brand colors, logo, and a handmade typeface for titles.
For this project I did an extensive amount of research on creating educational materials, and integrated everything i learned into the project. The inclusion of a mascot character creates a point of reference for kids to relate to and learn along with. The bold, sans serif text ensures legibility, especially with unfamiliar vocab words. The collage effect in the booklets are a nod to the message of the project encouraging hands-on exploration and putting together the pieces yourself. The best part of the project for me was hearing from educators about how much they’d like to use a fully realized version of this project in their homes and classrooms! graphicdesigner illustrator branding designer…As part of a program of study, every graduate of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design completes a “thesis”, or capstone, project to round out their senior year.
