Originally from Hamilton, ON, Etelka Nyilasi is a violin, viola, and piano studio teacher currently based in Edmonton, AB. She holds two Masters of Music degrees, one in Composition from Birmingham City University’s Birmingham Conservatoire (UK), and the other in Performance from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, where she focused on Middle Eastern music (Arabic and Turkish). Between her two master’s degrees she spent a year in Hungary at the Franz Liszt Academy’s Kodály Institute, where she obtained a diploma in Kodály Pedagogy. Prior to living and studying in the UK, she received her Bachelor of Music Composition from Wilfrid Laurier University. Having such a varied musical background, Etelka finds herself busy with all types of musical performances and activities. She is equally as active in Edmonton’s Classical music community as she is in the Middle Eastern music community, performing with various groups and ensembles. She is also often commissioned to transcribe and arrange music for strings, and maintains a busy private teaching practice with over 40 students.
