I see opportunities and options where others see problems. I have broad national-level experience creating, directing and designing complex, high-profile content projects – from creating the original mainstream MSNBC.com site, which changed the face of the internet, from defying odds and spearheading creation of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Public Web Program, from creating the key component of our team’s Pulitzer Prize Spot News Reporting win to editing, designing, and/or creating strategy for well over 100 books with over eight million copies in circulation. I’ve served as White House staff for three sitting presidents. I also have award-winning experience at three nationally-ranked newspapers, have run the U.S. Southern picture network for the Associated Press and been an award-winning magazine designer. I even created a software startup. Whether in my freelance or employment work, in all roles I teach as I go, regardless of the job level, title or creative style others have. I ask key questions, build buy-in and create consensus. Often I’m paving uncharted ground. I’ve led major editorial and design initiatives across Microsoft & MSNBC Interactive, WEST Magazine, San Jose Mercury News, The Washington Post, The White House, Courier-Journal & Louisville Times, and National Geographic Magazine. I’ve built and guided design desks, created award-winning graphics and information graphics, established national workflows, and nurtured cross-functional teams to deliver compelling visual storytelling. Through TheProfessionalEye.com I work with photographers to shape portfolios, projects and books.
