Rehabilitation project for an apartment/guest house belonging to the Polytechnic Institute of Porto.
The 73.85 m2 apartment contains a living/dining room, kitchen, a bathroom, and 2 bedrooms, each with its own balcony, one of which shares space with a small sunroom. It is an apartment intended to house visiting professors of the institution. It is quite outdated and in need of renovation.
There was the possibility of adding a bedroom to the dwelling, but due to the lack of usable space, a space division solution was applied using a folding partition that is also the wall of one of the bedrooms. This was a discreet solution to solve a spatial problem, which also made it possible to add another bathroom, making the original bathroom suitable for use by individuals with reduced mobility. This apartment is intended for use by two to three people, so there was a need to create an extra bathroom for added privacy.
The floor plan was not drastically modified, and the layout remains essentially the same. Just as there was a "reuse" of the layout, there was also of the existing floor coverings - ceramic and wood - and sanitary installations, creating a design that combines the old with the new, this new specifically referencing the use of birch plywood paneling that covers the entrance hall and corridor area.
