Hello. I’m James.
Versatile in both illustration and graphic design, I work in the children’s market on picture books, magazines, activity workbooks, educational resources, and packaging.
After 20 years as an art director by day and illustrator by night, I developed a passion for projects that contribute to childhood development in learning and creativity.
One role in particular was for The Kennedy Center. Throughout 11 seasons, I designed and illustrated over 100 concert guides for K–12 school performances. They’re full of clever writing, playful design, and colorful illustrations to help educate children about music through storytelling.
Other projects include Alphabeasts Alphabet Books box set for Alpha Toys, The Funny Zone joke book series for Norwood House Press, and a 32-page coloring book for Black & Veatch.
Clients include Scholastic Book Fairs, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Worthy Kids, Compass Point Books, Owlkids Books, and Cricket Media.
Based in Winter Park, Florida, I enjoy biking, reading, movies, and international travel.
Thank you for checking out my portfolio!

Illustrated a series of eleven joke books for Norwood House Press.
“Finally, joke books with more to them than just the same old gags. They also teach children how to write rib-ticklers of their own. Each chapter describes a specific type and how to write it. Brightly colored, eye-catching cartoons complement the texts. — School Library Journal
“Both teachers and students will enjoy these books. Amusing illustrations complement the humor. Recommended! — Library Media Connection

Designed as a young girl’s journal, the Cuesheet tells the story of spunky 9-year-old Ana and her imaginary friend, Amazing Voice, as they protect the barrio while Ana’s mom is in Iraq.

Recreated an illustration of the Triple Burner. It originally appeared as a simple black and white cartoon drawing inside a book that I illustrated titled “Your Health.”
I wanted to see it come to life in full color with more detail and a “wonky” style.

Alpha Toys introduced the Alphabeasts Alphabet Book Box Set to complement their popular Alphabeasts 15” plush toy line.
The books contain colorful illustrations of the Alphabeasts interacting with objects or characters that begin with the particular letter of the beast.
The Alphabeasts consist of 26 unique 15” double-sided plush toy ‘beasts’ with an upper case letter on one side and a lower case letter on the opposite side.
