I am Matteo Cirenei, a photographer specializing in architecture, interior, design and lifestyle imagery based in Milan, Italy. Over the years I have produced reportage for Interni and Domus magazines, covered the Fuori Salone del Mobile in Milan, and documented architectural installations, interiors and design objects for a broad audience. paper Sundials

Photographic Project based on architecture and urban landscape, finalist for the 2015 Celeste Prize International Art Prize and included in the Malerba Fund for Photography.

Light and matter. Sundials is my longest project, I dare say even endless project, as it is the representation of a state of balance in the form of images, deliberately recreated even when it doesn’t exist in reality. I use architecture as it allows me to remove myself from reality and recreate spatial figures it is easy to get lost in, cancelling out the meanings linked to places and environmental situations. I make my emotions flow into games of light and shapes. It is a very intimate work, not a simple representation of architectural details, I could do the same with rocks or other natural elements, but I am fascinated by the design world, and for me it is both a challenge and a homage, as I almost always use buildings designed by the masters of modern architecture or very famous contemporary constructions.” In this there is the divertissement of portraying details of very famous and photographed places, which are in this way unrecognizable, and then find their identity by reading the caption of the photo.Photographic Project based on architecture and urban landscape, finalist for the 2015 Celeste Prize International Art Prize and included in the Malerba Fund for Photography. paper Milan, Public Art

The photographic project investigates the formation of the cultural imaginary with respect to what is “public space”, and what is “public art”.

With “public art” we refer to works of art in any form, designed and executed with the specific intention of being placed in public places, usually outdoor and accessible to all.

Photographs aim to show contemporary works in their urban context, stimulating reflections on how the work reflects or does not reflect the identity of the place, is experienced as a work for the community, is appropriate to the space it occupies, and its conservation, its time of stay, etc…

The context in which the works are placed is part of the city, for this reason the dialogue with the surrounding environment is highlighted: the works of art in fact add visual quality to a built environment, and a careful urban design strategy promotes a higher level of integration between art, architecture and landscape.

This project was born with the intent to show art placed in the spaces available to citizens, whose social role is often not perceived. The artwork can be in a very popular place, or little attended, can be experienced physically, or simply watched. The context in which these works are placed is part of the city, which is why the dialogue with the surrounding environment is emphasized, and this last aspect is sometimes emphasized with human presences, rarefied, ghostly, passing through, or admiring the place.Public art in Milan The photographic project investigates the formation of the cultural imaginary with respect to what is “public space”, and what is “public art”. paper Finding Pier Luigi Nervi

The research project on the artworks of Pier Luigi Nervi that began in fer February 2015 stems from a 'careful analysis aimed at investigating with the use of the photographic tool the state of preservation of the works created by the great engineer in Italy.
Through a serial and objective approach, the two authors documented all the major and minor works located in the peninsula.

The unique aspect of this project is the use of medium- and large-format analog equipment, as well as the choice of black and white, which is of great help in emphasizing the forms of the structures and making the subjects stand out from their context, in many cases making graphic images intent on representing the aesthetics resulting from the ingenious use of reinforced concrete.

" Analog photography, with its technical limitations, also allowed us a more meditative and rigorous approach to the reading of space: we used two different formats, the square (6x6) and the panoramic (6x12), and with our own personal language, consistent from the first to the last site visited, we were able to create a corpus of images with a simultaneous vision from the general to the particular, which we hope will be useful in helping people better understand the work of Pier Luigi Nervi. "

“It was interesting to be able to see with our own eyes all the buildings scattered throughout Italy, managing to grasp the similarities of some formal solutions that would otherwise have been difficult to notice: the aim is to share this experience of ours with the public, having created a corpus of coherent images of a large number of works, and allowing them to be seen all together for the first time”.

The photographic project is carried out in collaboration with the “Pier Luigi Nervi Project” Foundation of Brussels, whose main purpose is to promote knowledge of Nervi’s extraordinary building achievements for the purpose of preserving and recovering existing structures, with the hope of contributing to scientific awareness and the protection of the architectural heritage of the Modern, of which these structures are among its highest expressions.

The two authors have produced around 500 photographs, creating the largest coherent archive to date on the work of Pier Luigi Nervi in Italy

paper At the edge of the Emptiness

A project inspired by Le Corbusier’s “Ville Verte”, a city where nature plays a crucial role in the qualitative redefinition of urban spaces, thanks to the creation of very tall buildings.
I wanted to give a utopian face to an evolving city, trying to imagine it “green”, with the tower buildings of Milan, both post-war and contemporary, in relation to the urban context: the point of view of the photographs, in fact, enhances the perception of urban green compared to how it is actually in the real world, today. At the Edge of the Emptiness A project inspired by Le Corbusier’s “Ville Verte”, a city where nature plays a crucial role in the qualitative redefinition of urban spaces, thanks to the creation of very tall buildings.
