I am a sociologist, semiotician and communication scholar with more than 25 years of experience researching democratisation in Central Europe, digital participation, inter-organisational knowledge exchange, academic knowledge production and evaluation, journalistic work, political discourse and health communication. My work is grounded in a pragmatic, practice‑oriented approach and draws on narrative analysis, conversation analysis and subject positioning to explore how people make sense of their worlds through talk, text and interaction.
My current project explores the affordances of an interplay between narrative and musical perspectives on semiotic worldmaking. I am on the job market for short to medium‑term contractual work while seeking a new academic post or funding. I have held academic appointments at Charles University in Prague, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Czech Academy of Sciences, Leeds University, Salford University and the University of the West of Scotland. I earned my PhD from the University of Bradford in 1998 with a thesis titled Beneath, Between and Behind Normality: Independent Cultural Spaces in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 1980s.
