    uniE603 APRIL 8th
This piece is a 5-minute composition written for bass strings, woodwinds, and guitars. The instrumentation is as follows. Alto Flutes 1 & 2. Bb Clarinet. Lead and Rhythm Guitars. Synth Pads/Bass/Fx. Electric Keyboard. Viola. Cello. Double Bass. Balsie Drum is a wooden drum placed on the floor, where the player sits on top to produce various pitches using their feet. Maracas. The composition draws inspiration from a traditional rhythm known as “Palo Muerto,” which translates to “Dead Wood.” This rhythm and accompanying chant originate from the northern part of Santo Domingo and are specifically associated with funeral rituals. It serves to honour the memories of loved ones who have passed away, providing a moving tribute through music. In this context, I aimed to create a piece that also reflects on a tragedy that struck on April 8, 2025, in Santo Domingo. On that day, 233 lives were lost due to the catastrophic collapse of a building's roof. The composition seeks to embody the sorrow and resilience of the community, intertwining the sombre tones of traditional rhythms with the emotions surrounding the loss, ultimately transforming grief into a powerful musical lament. music instrumental soundtrack
    paper The Ripple Effect

The first composition was created for a documentary called ‘The Ripple Effect’, which tells the moving story of Debbie Turnbull, a devoted mother who tragically lost her child to the dangers of river waters. This piece consists of four sections. In crafting the music for this documentary, I utilised a mixed ensemble with the following instrumentation:

    • Electric and acoustic guitars with effects
    • Strings
    • Synth string pads
    • Texture sounds
    • Percussion, including claves and shakers
    • Electric keyboards

I aligned the compositions with the emotions of each scene, creating a timeline for the duration of each musical segment to enhance emotional impact and synchronise the instrumentation. By exploring various formats with both electronic and acoustic instruments, I maintained a harmonic connection to each scene, revisiting motifs and phrases to weave together the diverse atmospheres of the musical spaces.
