East Meets West: The Footprint of Studio Ghibli

A book designed for print, completely produced and designed by me.

My insightful study illuminates Studio Ghibli’s remarkable ascent to global acclaim, exploring how its strategic partnerships—particularly with Disney—have transformed its storytelling for Western audiences, as well as looking into relevant comparisons between the two studios to reach deeper conclusions concerning Disney’s involvement in Ghibli’s global reach. This study will explore the studio’s globalisation efforts from a practical viewpoint while continuing to touch on the complex, conflicting sentiments of Hayao Miyazaki. His love-hate relationship with the West offers a unique lens into his creative genius and, through an exploration of his candid political opinions, this study reveals how Miyazaki’s ambivalence towards Western society has shaped the very fabric of his films and influenced his narratives to resonate deeply with audiences globally.

Certain influences drawn from European aesthetics and literature have coloured Studio Ghibli’s landscapes and characters, and have continued to inspire pieces of Miyazaki’s work throughout his filmmaking career. This study aims to explore the delicate balance he maintains between celebrating the beauty of Western influences and staunchly opposing the American agenda it often represents. How do his passions for European aesthetics collide with his criticisms of American culture?

Studio Ghibli’s films tell stories of Miyazaki’s personal opinions on war and the relationship between humans and the environment. His ability to depict the neighbouring clash of humanity’s beauty and flaws, helps Ghibli to translate across borders and resonate with global audiences.

    The Contradiction of Student Culture

A 60 second documentary project based on student life and culture. I wanted to focus on the clashing pressures of sudden independence and the necessity of social expansion.

    Wave to Earth Album Release

Gathering inspiration and ideas from existing Wave To Earth album identities and building a new product for an album release. Intention to maintain synergy while offering an exciting new look.

Building material for an upcoming tour, presenting the tour dates, album title, band identity, and band members. Focus on layout and visual balance as well as ensuring the demographic is reached through colourful and exciting but simple visuals.

    Waipo Noodle Bar Identity

This project focuses on the branding and identity of a Chinese noodle bar ran by two sisters. It takes heavy inspiration from the noodles that my 外婆 would send abroad to me and my sister when we were little. We weren’t sure of the brand name so would refer to them as
‘Waipo noodles’ growing up. The identity incorporates a fluid relationship between the grandmother and food to reinforce the welcoming nature of the noodle bar and the authenticity of its food.

    J&M Design Magazine

Designing the cover and interior pages of an interior design magazine for @joshandmattdesign on Instagram. Josh and Matt are an Australian couple who share their journey with designing their home, showcasing their distinct colourful style and vision through its interior.

    An Anthropology of Introversion

This is a poem book designed and illustrated by me, taking inspiration from an introversion photography project that I carried out in college. The stories told within the poems prompted my illustrations.
