This large-scale artwork for the Children’s Unit at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Super Speciality Hospital in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, features 23 endemic animals hidden within a vibrant jungle scene. Inspired by Sri Lanka’s flora, fauna, and naturally bright colour palettes, the piece was designed to feel both playful and culturally rooted.
Created specifically for a paediatric healing environment, the artwork encourages young patients to explore, search, and spot all 23 animals—promoting curiosity, distraction, and a sense of discovery during what can be an anxious time. The composition, use of colour, and level of detail were carefully considered to balance engagement with calmness, supporting a soothing visual atmosphere while still bringing energy and joy to the space.
This artwork was originally developed as a large-scale wall piece to engage paediatric patients through colour and storytelling. Its success in the hospital setting led to it also being selected as the cover design for their accompanying book.
The project reflects my approach to designing for children’s contexts: research-led, emotionally aware, and focused on creating visuals that are supportive, imaginative, and meaningful within a clinical environment. illustrator…This large-scale artwork for the Children’s Unit at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Super Speciality Hospital in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, features 23 endemic animals hidden within a vibrant jungle scene.
