Illustrations to the visual study

This project explores the tension between artistic freedom and political control in Dovzhenko’s novel “Enchanted Desna”.
The visual language used in the illustrations is based on “decoding” the messages written between the lines—those that cannot be
expressed openly. The illustration process employs methods of
juxtaposition and contrast to reflect the tension between the author’s desire for free self-expression and the need for self-censorship. At the same time as reading the novella and conducting this visual exploration, a parallel historical study was carried out, which conceptually provided significant support throughout the process.
