    paper A Resource Based AI Decision Algorithm for Non-Playable Characters

    This study introduces a resource-based decision-making technique for invoking narratives through non-playable character (NPC) behaviours in 2D spatial environments. The goal was to develop and assess the technique’s capacity to create dynamic, emotionally engaging NPCS that enhance narrative immersion through procedurally generated relationships and emergent storylines. A 2D sandbox game prototype using the Godot engine featured a modular AI with traits, resources, and memory. A/B testing (N=40) compared procedural NPCs against human-scripted ones and analyzed them with non-parametric tests for narrative immersion factors. Results showed no significant differences in interaction relevance, clarity, believability, narrative feasibility, or engagement between NPC types. The study concludes that the resource-based PCG technique effectively generates NPC behaviors for narrative immersion via coherent interactions and emergent plots, proving PCG’s viability for dynamic game worlds. Recommendations include refining emotional models, traits, and memory systems.
