Kebaya is a traditional Indonesian dress that is rich in philosophical and historical values. Kebaya has also developed in Southeast Asian countries with their own characteristics, giving rise to several issues related to claims as a country’s cultural heritage, which are then followed up through single nomination. To support and preserve kebaya, this illustrated book of kebaya introduction encyclopedia is designed to introduce various types of kebaya in Indonesia to children aged 8-12 years as the nation’s young generation and as a medium for storing cultural information. The use of illustration media was chosen to make it easier for children to understand the contents of the encyclopedia. The data of this research was taken from data collection methods with interviews, documentation, and observation, using data collection techniques from Sugiyono, and analysed using the Miles & Huberman model. The design method used is The Design Method by Eric Karjaluoto which is adapted according to the design needs in this research, namely discovery, planning, creative, and application. The concept raised in this research is to use a subdued illustration style with pastel colours to create a serious impression but still in accordance with the needs of children’s book illustrations. The results of testing on children aged 8-12 years show that this encyclopedia book is effective in increasing children’s knowledge about the history, types, and development of kebaya in Indonesia.
This project was one of the most enjoyable projects for me.
A large illustration was used as a wedding backdrop with a Javanese-Sundanese theme. Elements of nature found on the island of Java were used as the main concept.
The theme colors were earth tones with dark red accents for a chic and attractive look.
