Work Experience

Freelance Senior Designer at Various design studios
January 1, 2009 - Present
I’m a freelance designer specialising in brand identity and graphic design. As well as working directly with clients, I also freelance at a senior level for other design groups. I'm based in the UK (near Bath) but work with clients all over, helping everyone from charities to classical music venues harness the positive effect of good design. Each project begins with a thorough exploration of aims, attitude, and audience. I then bring together strong ideas, captivating messages, and stunning visual design to create meaningful design solutions. Solutions that can flex across print, exhibitions and digital to maximise reach and impact. I work with organisations of all kinds, both big and small, and have developed brand identities and communication concepts for a wide range of public sector, non-profit, cultural, and corporate clients.
Designer at Thirteen
January 1, 2007 - December 31, 2009
A small, highly creative design consultancy based in Bristol, with clients in the corporate, cultural and government sectors. I worked as a designer, collaborating with the creative director and a small team of designers. My role involved client liaison, developing creative briefs, job costing, creating design concepts through to final artwork, as well as art direction and production management.

    uniE621 Night Watch
CHARITY BRANDING Night Watch, a tech-enabled, wildlife survey from the Bat Conservation Trust. Its’ purpose is to increase awareness of our endangered nocturnal species. They sought a brand identity, to promote the survey and engage young adults from ethnic minorities in conservation. My response was a compelling campaign anchored by the intriguing headline, ‘Who will you find?’ The bold letter forms of the logo and headline revealed captivating photographic images of nocturnal creatures emerging from the night sky. Employing prominent typography and vibrant colours, I crafted a brand identity with a robust urban vibe, resonating effectively with the inner-city audience. This strong visual identity was seamlessly extended across posters, a website, and social media, ensuring adaptability and widespread engagement. See case study here: https://www.twine.net/signin
    uniE621 Family and Childcare Trust
CHARITY BRANDING Through research, campaigning and practical support the Family and Childcare Trust works to make the UK a better place for families. I devised a flexible and spirited brand identity to communicate the charities’ vision and activities to a diverse audience of policy makers and parents. I liked the idea of using a graphic pinwheel as a positive symbol of childhood. The shapes within it were used to form a geometric visual language that combined gravitas with childlike charm. Applications included; website, strategy document, stationery, research documents, welcome leaflet and brand manual. See case study here: https://www.twine.net/signin
    uniE621 St John’s Smith Square
ARTS VENUE BRANDING I designed a new brand identity for St John’s Smith Square, a much-loved classical music venue, set in a 18th-century baroque church in the heart of Westminster. They wanted to keep their existing logo, but needed a much stronger sense of identity to reveal their multi-layered charms to a wider audience. At the heart of the new branding was the idea of ‘discovery’, which was inspired by the 18th-century grand tours and the discovery of cultural treasures. This idea featured in both the headings and main messages, to illustrate the different strands of St John’s offer. It also featured strongly in the visual language, which made use of motifs from St John’s architecture to form elegant patterns and reveal imagery of both the performers and venue. Typography and colour were both used to give a contemporary feel, echoing the spirit of baroque and classical music. Applications included display banners, a newsletter and website. I also designed season, series and festival brochures. See case study here: https://www.twine.net/signin
