Heart of the City Neighborhood Association is working to record the history of a 108 year old Black neighborhood named in honor of Paul Laurence Dunbar. The goal of the project is to document the history of the Dunbar neighborhood and use the community’s cultural heritage as a foundation for sustainable future redevelopment. The project will use photos, videos and other media to depict life during the neighborhood’s 108 year history, tell the stories of current and former residents, highlight recent community engagement efforts and demonstrate why and how to include cultural heritage as a foundation for future development. The collection of information gathered will be used for storytelling, increasing knowledge about the Dunbar history, encourage tourism and to support revitalization efforts.

Member Duties :

The AmeriCorps VISTA activities will include creating a video, audio and photo library that depicts community events, interactions with partners, residents, stakeholders, collaborating with neighborhood history committee, KC Museum staff and community partners to plan and prepare the Dunbar neighborhood museum exhibit scheduled to begin in early 2024, assisting in development of a marketing strategy and materials for use of collected content, meeting with current and former residents to gather information related to area history and traditions with community stakeholders, meeting with state and local officials, librarians, and historians to capture information related to neighborhood history, attending and documenting online and in-person events and assisting in the creation of a documentary using collected recordings.

Pay: $1,350.00 per month
