Location: Boston, MA

Contract: Temporary, Full-time

POSITION: Scenic Artist Overhire

DEPARTMENT: Production

SCHEDULE: 40 hour work week and possibility for overtime

STATUS: Temporary

PAY RANGE: $22 per hour

REPORTS TO: Charge Scenic Artist

Dates of Employment:

  • Dates TBD
  • Artist will be put on Overhire list and called as needed.

Job Duties:

  • Paints scenery for productions and contracted work.
  • Assists in all aspects of the execution of the scenic design in full-scale as it pertains to texture, paint and paint finish, with accurate color and style representation from the renderings, research, plans and industry standards.
  • Maintains paint supplies and equipment for the paint shop, and making shop improvements as needed, or directed by the Charge or the Assistant Charge.
  • Works with Charge, Assistant Charge & Lead to create samples for painting all scenery for both Huntington productions and any project the Huntington has been contracted to execute.
  • Mixes colors according to Designer’s renderings, and the designer communications.
  • Follows and promotes safe working practices in the use of shop tools and equipment. Instructing all personnel in the proper use and handling of materials including adherence to and promotion of safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment.

In addition to the duties listed above, the Huntington Theatre Company expects the following of each employee: adheres to Huntington policies and procedures; works in a safe manner; performs duties as workload necessitates; maintains a positive and respectful attitude; communicates regularly with supervisor about department issues; demonstrates efficient time management and prioritizes workload; demonstrates regular and consistent attendance and punctuality; meets department productivity standards; participates in Huntington events as needed or required; and completes other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in scenic painting or the equivalent.
  • Knowledge of geometry and perspective for accurate layout and design.
  • Must be proficient in proper surface prep, for all surfaces such as, wood, metal, foam, plastic and fabrics.
  • Basic knowledge in chemistry for proper handling of solvents**.**
  • Experience with painting techniques and theory in addition to carving, faux finishing, and woodworking skills is preferred.
  • Understand carpentry tools, grades of paintbrushes, sprayers, and carving and sculpting tools as well as the knowledge of cleaning and maintenance for these tools.
  • Must have a familiarity with scenic design, stage carpentry, inventory control, color mixing, drawing, drafting, carving, faux finishing, and basic woodworking.
  • Able to use hand/power tools properly and safely.
  • Time management and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Please provide photo examples of past applicable work.
  • Having a working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator, or similar programs is strongly desirable.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and comfortable working at height.
