Position Summary: Tahirih is seeking a temporary, part-time Media Relations Manager to lead the planning and execution of Tahirih’s media strategies to increase the organization’s thought leadership among media and other external stakeholders. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Media Relations Manager will work closely with the communications team as well as program and policy staff across the organization to grow our reputation with reporters, and position Tahirih as a leader on issues relating to immigration, asylum, gender-based violence, and on trauma-informed, survivor-centered services.
Essential Job Functions:
- Develop and implement strategies to increase Tahirih’s visibility among media audiences and other stakeholders.
- Grow Tahirih’s relationship with reporters in relevant issue areas.
- Effectively influence and contribute to a communications strategy for the organization that drives growth and engagement among media and other key audiences.
Requirements:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive media outreach strategy in line with the organization’s overall strategic communications plan, including establishing key metrics and success measures.
- Increase Tahirih’s thought leadership in key issue areas by securing media placements and growing relevant reporter relationships.
- Plan, lead, and coordinate media outreach, triage media requests, pitch stories, and develop relationships with key media sources to advance Tahirih’s mission and highlight its impact.
- Lead and coordinate media-facing rapid response activities with the policy team and other subject matter experts, including drafting quotes and fielding media requests.
- Closely track current events to advise on hooks and angles to insert Tahirih and our message into the news, and to keep internal stakeholders apprised of relevant media narratives around our issues.
- Partner with program and policy teams to develop leads and identify opportunities to elevate our programs, activities, reports, and other content to drive media coverage of the organization.
- In collaboration with the Director of Communications, support Tahirih staff and survivor advocates who are engaging with media, which includes helping speakers prepare for media interviews and providing talking points, messaging, mock interviews, and coaching.
- Work with Communications Coordinator/Writer to draft and edit press releases, op-eds/opinion essays, letters to the editor, blog posts, and other written assets.
- Work with Communications Coordinator/Writer to create reports, one-pagers, briefing books, and other written materials to build awareness and understanding of Tahirih’s issues among reporters, advocates, and supporters.
- Track Tahirih’s media coverage and manage our press lists.
Qualifications:
- Deep understanding and analysis of racism and oppression, and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Commitment to Tahirih’s mission, clients, and nonpartisan advocacy style.
- Ability to exhibit trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally competent approaches to working with survivors of violence and people with historically marginalized identities.
- Familiarity with media landscape as it relates to Tahirih’s issues, including immigration and refugee rights, women’s rights, and gender-based violence.
- Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills; experience generating engaging content for broader audiences.
- Ability to take complex policy ideas and translate it into compelling messages.
- Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing advocacy and/or communications strategies with several stakeholders.
- Ability to position media relations discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.
- Self-starter, able to work independently; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
- Strong planning and time management skills, with an ability to coordinate deliverables across multiple internal collaborators.
- At least 5 years of experience in media relations.
- Fluency in Spanish (written and spoken) a plus.
