The campus enjoys incredible vistas of the Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau with views that span across several states. The region is widely known as an outdoor recreational paradise for campers, boaters, cyclists, climbers, cavers and hikers, all this while being conveniently located within two hours of Atlanta, Nashville and Knoxville.

Opportunity:

We are currently seeking a Theatre Technical Director who will oversee and direct the technical aspects of dramatic production for Covenant College Theatre, by overseeing and/or performing the work of set, sound, lights, and props. Depending on the show, this may involve conceiving of the design, working with guest designers, or student designers. This individual will be responsible for managing the production budget, purchase of scenic materials, training and supervision of student workers, crew and temporary staff workers, and attending production meetings and rehearsals as needed with prior agreement.

Primary Duties:

  • Oversee building of sets, lights and other technical aspects for producing a season of 2 straight plays in a small 195-seat house, and one musical in a 600-seat house.
  • Supervise student workers to accomplish this work by teaching basic construction, scenic painting, prop fabrication skills, basic lighting and sound design. Supervision includes making work assignments, verifying hours worked, processing time cards, etc. as appropriate for students doing work study, Mark 10:45, paid temp work, Company Muster hours, and/or Production Practicum hours.
  • Supervise and/or coordinate with any possible contract workers to accomplish above technical work.
  • Order and purchase scenic and related materials in collaboration with the Artistic Director; supervise the use of and inventory of scenic and related materials.
  • Attend production meetings for plays in production, plus other departmental meetings as scheduled.
  • Attend rehearsals and provide input as needed.
  • Advisement and additional training of Stage Managers as needed.
  • Approve facility reservations (FURFs) for Sanderson 215

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or associate degree.
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in technical theatre production.
  • Strong creative, management, organizational, building, stage lighting and/or scene painting skills.
  • Experience managing budgets, and supervising crew personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time.

Preferences:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical theatre, scene painting, lighting and/or stage management, with significant demonstrated success.
  • Working knowledge of Google Apps and experience with a website content management system.

Physical Work Environment:

  • This role is expected to be performed on campus unless otherwise directed or arranged for and operates primarily in a professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and other job-related technology.
  • There is a mix of standing and sitting for this particular role in addition to significant amounts of bending, squatting, carrying items, painting and related purposes.
  • Classified as moderate, occasional lifting or lowering an object from one level to another (includes upward pulling) up to 35 lbs.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas and conversation by means of the spoken word; needs to be fluent and conversant using the English language.
  • Days and hours of work are somewhat variable depending on lightness or heaviness of the requirements of a given theatre production, but are generally Monday through Friday, 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening or Saturday work may be preferable, as job duties demand.
  • Travel is not required for this position.

Position Classification:

  • FLSA Non-Exempt
  • Part-time; 800 total hours per academic year (approximately 20-25 hours/week x 33 weeks.)
