Nonclassical Label and Marketing Manager
Nonclassical is looking for a collaborative Label and Marketing Manager (£28,000-£30,000 pro rata, dependent on experience; 0.6-0.8 FTE) to join our small team on its mission to support emerging artists to develop new music to share with diverse audiences through our label and event platforms.
This role works closely with Nonclassical’s Executive and Artistic Directors, Marketing & Event Manager, and Label Committee to devise the release strategy, managing, promoting, and delivering releases alongside nurturing artists’ development. This is an exciting time to join a dynamic organisation as it seeks to diversify and grow its artistic programme and reach internationally, increasing revenue while developing the careers of innovative musicians and composers.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Label Management
- Work with Artistic Director and Label Committee - in consultation with Executive Director - to find and sign new artists to the label
- Design and coordinate release schedules and strategies
- Lead Label Committee agenda, devising agenda and minuting
- Coordinate and manage all digital and physical production for releases – from recording, mixing and mastering to final production and uploading to digital distributor system
- Negotiate and amend agreements for artists including recording agreements
- Write, negotiate and amend copyright licences
- Compile and submit release metadata to PPL and manage the back catalogue
- Work closely with distributors, retailers, designers, and manufacturers
- Maintain stock levels for distributors and Nonclassical’s Bandcamp store
- Pursue commercial opportunities in exploitation of owned copyright, including sync
- Sell merchandise at Nonclassical events and label markets as required and manage direct sales via Bandcamp
- Write and present reports on label activity for quarterly Board meetings
- Acknowledge all solicited and unsolicited proposals, responding to general enquiries appropriately
- Build our Bandcamp Label Subscribers to encourage sustainable growth of label income
Artist Development
- Find and develop acts for ‘Outside the Lines’ besides AiR (Artist-in-Residence) Composers and similar projects, supporting artists to record new work and understand the workings of a label
- Keep abreast of new music scene – attend gigs and feeding back on new trends, ideas, nights, and performers
- Promote new and current artists, developing strategies to help artists achieve their vision
- Commit to proactively seeking to diversify the artists Nonclassical supports, monitoring progress across the whole release schedule and proactively seeking to find artists we are underserving
- Evaluate and catalyse the on-going progress of Nonclassical artists and how our support has contributed to their success, for funding reports and to measure charitable impact
- Maintain good working relations with Nonclassical’s roster of artists, encouraging continued support to the growing roster
Marketing and Communication
- Create and oversee strategies for communication activity for all releases in collaboration with Marketing & Events Manager and Digital Marketer
- Work closely with designer on print and web assets and/or design in-house, working with Nonclassical team and artists for proof approvals
- Manage and create content for the NC website and social channels, maintaining consistent representation of the NC brand, including visual identity and tone of voice
- Coordinate release promo - with or without external PR agency
- Lead Radio and Playlist plugging in conjunction with distributor
- Work on securing relationships with appropriate media outlets
- Work closely with team and distributors to promote releases
- Drive engagement and revenue through digital and social advertising and content promotion
- Use insights from all digital activity to inform tactics to build reach, engagement, and income as well for strategic planning, funding, and impact reports
- Oversee Nonclassical’s role as a curator, updating Spotify playlists and working to promote the Nonclassical brand
Finance and Administration
- Draft, manage and monitor label budgets, in consultation with Executive Director and Finance Manager for reporting against budgets and income targets
- Coordinate and maintain sales reports from all sources
- Manage annual stock takes
- Account to artists twice per year, using Infinite Catalogue royalty software
- Take minutes at meetings as requested
- Tidy and maintain shared Google Drive
- Evaluate the success of releases in terms of the impact on artist’s career development and audience reach
- Contribute to Nonclassical overall fundraising targets
- Other tasks as directed
Essential Requirements
- Experience in working for a label – ideally in publishing, recording, or production
- At least two years’ administrative or project management experience
- Interest in music, ideally contemporary classical, electronic or experimental
- A commitment to diversifying Nonclassical’s artists, programme, and audiences
- Understanding music law and copyright
- Well organised, with ability to create/execute plans and schedules, and to manage own workload and time efficiently to deadlines
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong commercial awareness and ability to negotiate, persuade and influence
- Experience with marketing and content creation for digital platforms
- Financially literate, with a track record managing budgets
- Technically literate, with proficiency in office software
- Self-starter with a strong achievement drive and commitment to meeting objectives
- Flexibility to work evening and weekends, as required (12+ per year)
Desirable
- Links with UK promoters, musicians, composers, organisations, and labels in new classical, experimental, and/or experimental music and partnership experience
- Understanding advances in technology, specifically in relation to the way music is accessed and consumed
- Experience of delegation and/or line-management
- Graphic software knowledge (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere)
- Experience of web design / basic understanding of HTML
- Experience with social media channels
