CANTORS/CHORAL SECTION LEADERS & SUBS NEEDED!

St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in North Royalton is hiring an Alto Section Leader/Cantor and a Bass Section Leader/Cantor for the 2023-2024 fiscal year and choral season. We are also looking for substitute Section Leaders in all four sections! Candidates should have a strong knowledge of Catholic music and hymnody (chant, psalms, traditional hymns, and contemporary Catholic worship hymns), and strong sight reading skills. Selected choral section leader/cantors would participate in the 30+ person parish Eucharistic Choir as the leader of their given section, and also serve in a select ensemble comprising more advanced musicians in the program, known as The St. Cecilia Singers.

Rehearsals and Schedule

• Rehearsals are typically on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9pm
• Usual commitment is one mass per weekend (alternating between a Saturday 4pm vigil, a 9:30am Sunday mass, and an 11:30am Sunday mass, with schedule for the semester given well in advance)
• Payment will usually be $40/rehearsal and $40/Mass, with many extra opportunities to cantor additional masses and numerous feast days and holy days throughout the year, and additional payment at busier times of the year per discussion with the Music Director. Expect the average for each of these positions to come out to $4,000/year, give or take.

Primary Responsibilities

• Participating in weekly choir rehearsals (typically Thursday evenings from 7-9pm)
• Participating in weekly masses that the Eucharistic Choir and/or St. Cecilia Singers sing at (usually two 9:30am Sunday Masses, one 11:30am Sunday Mass, and one 4pm Saturday Mass a month)
• Helping to lead sectionals when needed (coordinating with the Music Director and other section leaders)
• Assisting the Music Director in passing out materials and set up at rehearsals, masses, and retreats
• Filling out the online schedule/ doodle with your availability for other masses/services that may need covered throughout the year
• Being punctual, prepared, and a good sight reader
• Performing occasional solos and serving as a psalmist/cantor for at least one choral mass and one non-choral mass a month. The non-choral mass would likely be the preceding or following mass from the choral mass on a given weekend. For Example: If there is a Choral Mass-4pm Saturday, you may also be asked to cantor the 5:30pm mass that immediately follows it. These would be $40 each. St. Albert’s is one of the largest parishes in the Diocese of Cleveland, and we have 6 masses, a weekend (2 Saturday, 4 Sunday), so there will be many additional opportunities to sing!
