Art Director with Theatrical and/or Themed Attraction Design Experience

Hotopp Creative Studio is seeking an Art Director with theatrical and/or themed attraction design experience for a seasonal, full-time position on ICE!, a holiday-themed attraction, built in place at the Gaylord Hotel & Resort in Aurora, Colorado by master ice carvers. The Art Director (AD) for ICE! will work closely with the ice carving team and will be responsible for ensuring that the finished ICE attraction matches the designer’s intention and vision as indicated in the design drawings and renderings.

Estimated time commitment:

This is an onsite, full-time, temporary position, for approximately 5 weeks beginning in early to mid-October. The AD will be based at Gaylord Hotel & Resort in Aurora, CO - local AND out of town applicants are encouraged to apply! Hours will vary from 8 -12 work hours per day, 7 days per week, for the duration of the construction period.

Art director responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the ice detail carving team to ensure that all sculptures are in line with the design intent and brand standards, and meet the high quality expectations of the client.
  • Working with the ice construction team to ensure that all ice architecture and internal ice lighting matches the design intent as illustrated in the construction drawings.
  • Anticipating challenges and errors in construction and working with the ice artisans to find creative solutions that maintain the aesthetic value of the design.
  • Attending weekly production meetings and maintaining a daily log and photo records of artisan progress and notes regarding any challenges with the ice design for future reference.
  • Coordinating with drape and rigging vendors to ensure the correct placement of masking and overhead props.
  • Participating in floor layout marking.
  • In coordination with the props manager, unpacking, inventorying, assessing, organizing and tracking of props. Supervising prop installation by artisans.

Skills Needed for Success:

  • Experience with sculpting, scenic or themed design, or related 3d design processes, and an excellent eye for line and proportion of sculptures.
  • Ability to read design and construction drawings and communicate with artisans to clarify design intent as needed.
  • First-hand experience and knowledge of basic theatrical production processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic construction techniques and theatrical prop / set dressing techniques
  • Ability to work closely with the Chinese ice-carving team. A full-time translator will be provided, but patience and understanding are required to overcome cultural and language barriers.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced construction environment, and the discretion to know when to solicit input on design decisions from the ice concept designer and creative director.
  • Excellent communication and client management skills
  • Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Additional requirements:

  • The AD must provide his/her own laptop computer or other mobile device with excel or other compatible spreadsheet software, email, internet access, and ability to upload photos from a digital camera to file sharing site.
  • Cold gear. Note that the ice construction area is kept at a temperature varying from 8-12 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind from air handlers. The AD will spend the majority of his or her work hours in the cold, often for 30-90 minutes between warming breaks.
  • Appropriate warm clothing, gloves, and steel-toed safety shoes are required. Hard hats and goggles must be worn during construction.
  • This position requires some lifting, up to 50 lbs., when unloading and organizing props, and may require other physical activity such as climbing ladders and working in a construction zone with potentially slippery conditions.

Compensation:

Day rate, commensurate with experience. Round-trip travel, hotel accommodations (if not local to the Denver area), and a per diem will be provided.

Pay: $325.00 - $425.00 per day
