Job Description

The Brightness in Black Content Creator Fellowship is a 6.5-month program designed for Philadelphia-based audio-visual content creators. The fellows will play a vital role in bringing Brightness in Black to life by creating content and facilitating signature interviews in the local Philadelphia community, as well as potentially during out-of-state events.

This grant-funded position reports to the Program Director and offers personal and professional development through training, practical experience, and participation in a learning community. It is important to note that housing is not provided, and candidates must reside in the Philadelphia metro area.

The fellowship is focused on exploring oral history, media creation, community-based storytelling practices, and driving narrative change in the Black community. The ending of employment will be on December 12, 2025, unless the grant is renewed.

Requirements

Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree, ideally in video or multimedia production or a similar field of study.
• Must reside in the Philadelphia metro area and be available for both remote and in-person work at Philadelphia-based locations (note: housing is not provided).
• Willingness to travel for scheduled out-of-state events (travel costs covered by StoryCorps).
• Interest in developing skills in storytelling, interviewing, media/content creation, and community engagement.
• Audio/Video production knowledge, including familiarity with filming, lighting, and audio equipment, as well as basic editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci, Final Cut).
• Strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate effectively in various ways (verbal, written, visual).
• Dependable and organized with effective time management skills.
• Able to work independently and collaboratively, comfortable engaging with the public in a respectful manner.
• Demonstrates cultural humility and contributes to an inclusive work environment.
• Fellows must transport equipment weighing up to 50 lbs and engage in local travel (60% of the job).

Preferred Qualifications

• Understanding of content trends and best practices across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook.
• Proficiency in graphic design, including programs such as Canva.
• Prior experience with interviewing and video or audio production.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to transport a bag (25 lbs) and a Field Recording Kit (50 lbs, on wheels) to recording sites.

Additional Information

This position is not benefits-eligible and candidates are required to work part-time. Work schedules will be preplanned and may require evenings, weekends, and/or holidays to accommodate community partners. COVID guidelines permitting, in-office work is optional except in specific circumstances like training or meetings. All offers requiring in-person work are contingent on candidates being fully vaccinated.
