I began my college career as a Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering major at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) in August of 1998, and I still use some of the basic engineering skills I learned back then today. For example, I still create renderings using the Solid Edge computer-aided drawing program. Although studying engineering provided a great technical foundation, I decided to change my major to graphic design after 5 years because it brought together technology and art, which are two of my passions. I earned my Bachelor of Art from UAH in 2007. My most recent position was a Professional Graphic and Web Designer at a research center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), my Alma Mater. During the nearly 17 years that I worked there, I designed materials such as scientific posters, logos, signage, and any other visual resources that were needed, both print and web. The research center is partly funded by NASA, so I also had the great honor to participate in NASA projects. I had the privilege to design the logo for the NASA Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) Hurricane Field Campaign (_Website not available. Education

Bachelor of Art at The University of Alabama in Huntsville
August 19, 1998 - May 9, 2007
I began college as a Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering major at UAH in 1998, and I still use some of the basic engineering skills I learned back then today. For example, I still create renderings using the SolidEdge computer-aided drawing program. This skill led to a student position at UAH's Earth Science System Center to create engineering drawings of airborne and spaceborne lightning detection instruments. Although studying Mechanical/ Aerospace Engineering provided a great technical foundation, I decided to change my major to graphic design after 5 years because it brought together two of my favorite subjects - technology and art. I became proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (mainly Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), Dreamweaver, and Flash. I also studied color theory, drawing, photography, sculpture, and printmaking (including intaglio and lino-cut). While finishing my undergrad, I worked as the layout editor for UAH's school newspaper The Exponent, where I used Adobe PageMaker to place articles, ads, and photographs in the newspaper layout. Several of my student art pieces, both graphic and handmade, were accepted to display in various student art shows, and some won awards. My student portfolio can be found on Coroflot at https://www.coroflot.com/tammy_w_smith/stream.

Qualifications

Bachelors of Art / Emphasis in Graphic Design
August 19, 1998 - May 9, 2007
GPA 3.4 - Magna Cum Laude, Dean's list
Research Associate I / Graphic Designer
August 14, 2007 - July 31, 2024
In this position, I was a graphic designer for the Information Technology and Systems Center (ITSC), a research center at UAH. Most of my time was focused on projects for the Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center (GHRC), a partnership between NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and UAH. I have enjoyed designing many print materials, including posters, brochures, bookmarks, flyers, logos, t-shirts, conference signs, and annual reports. As an example, the logo and diagrams I designed for the Lightning Imaging sensor are featured in the May/June 2016 issue of The Earth Observer. Another logo that I designed was for the 2010 GRIP Hurricane Field Campaign, which was displayed on the Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle during the mission. I also designed and maintained websites and web components like icons, banners, mastheads, web page mockups, and layouts. I am most familiar working with Drupal, HTML, and CSS, but I am a quick learner and confident I can master working with any Content Management System. Both the ITSC and the GHRC websites are built in Drupal, which I designed and maintained on a regular basis. Due to a recent change in how NASA is managing their websites, and the migration of the GHRC website into another domain, I was laid off.
Layout Editor - The Exponent, UAH’s student newspaper
August 17, 2005 - May 3, 2006
I used Adobe PageMaker to place all articles, ads, and images into the newspaper. I also redesigned the front page of the newspaper.

April 28, 2006 - April 28, 2006
Collateral Material -Poster Design - Gold & Silver Newspaper - Newspaper Fractional page - Silver Interactive Media - Banner Ads & Ecards - Gold & Silver - Websites - Gold
Girl Scout Gold Award
May 29, 1998 - May 29, 1998

These are logos for NASA Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Ground Validation (GV) field campaigns. During these missions, precipitation measurements and other data were collected by satellite, aircraft, and ground instruments.
uniE621 LOGO: Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center (GHRC)
The GHRC is a collaboration between The University of Alabama in Huntsville and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. For years, the GHRC acronym was spelled out as the Global Hydrology Resource Center, but as the research evolved to atmospheric hazards involving more than just precipitation, the word HYDROLOGY was changed to the more broad term HydroMETEORology. Therefore, the logo was also adjusted.

The GHRC is a collaboration between The University of Alabama in Huntsville and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. This is the first logo that I designed for the GHRC where the acronym spelled out "Global Hydrology Resource Center" but later changed.
