This was a particularly fun and challenging logo and design direction project. The missions department of Riverbend Church approached me with an idea for a new ministry organization that would reach outside the walls of the church, and serve as a catalyst inside the community to mobilize other churches, faith communities, local volunteer organizations, and business to engage in serving the vulnerable communities in Austin. Initially, they were calling the organization Riverbend Urban Ministries. No one on the team loved the title they had, and they were looking for something that would speak to the spirit of comrade and cooperation that they aspired to achieve with this new opportunity. One thing the director of the project new was that he wanted the word “blessing” to be in the title and that the logo needed to contain a heart and an olive branch.
After several rounds of throwing names around, I landed on the idea calling the organization a Co-op as it spoke to the heart of what they were targeting — not ownership of a caring for others, but an invitation to partner with others caring for others. The director loved this idea and the Austin Blessings Co-op was born. The logo presented some challenges, but we decided to attempt fitting the skyline of Austin, and the aforementioned olive branch, inside a heart. I liked the idea of using strong, solid lines to anchor the imagery of the logo — which was softer in its imagery — because it gave the logo a more modern look that would transfer universally well across multiple media (signs, shirts, stickers, etc.).
With the primary logo created, we moved on creating logos for the other partner organizations inside the co-op. With each logo, we tried to keep a cohesive look and feel by maintaining the line weight, level of detail, and most importantly, the heart.
While other designers ultimately carried out the collateral for the brand under my direction (website, t-shirts, printed collateral, etc), the primary logo designs were created by me.
