In 2004, Krauss released his solo debut, Far From Enough — a collection of original compositions featuring an all-star ensemble of Bill Frisell, Jerry Douglas, Steve Jordan, and Alison Krauss. The album reached #6 on the Billboard® Contemporary Jazz Chart. His follow-up, II, featuring guitarist Dean Parks and drummer Matt Chamberlain, was released in 2007. In 2016, he collaborated with lever harpist Maeve Gilchrist on Vignette, a duo project of original material. Primarily instrumental, Viktor describes his solo work as "soundtracks without movies," with nods to jazz and classic rock. A 2006 fellow of the prestigious Sundance Institute Film Composers' Lab, Krauss has composed for directors including Ken Burns and the late Robert Altman. His music from solo recordings is featured daily as interstitial "bumpers" on National Public Radio. In late 2020, Krauss completed construction on his private recording facility, Split Window Studio, housing an extensive collection of vintage synthesizers, guitars, and effects — available for both private and commercial projects.
