Replacement of a disastrous monolithic backend in the online gambling world, built in Java with an architecture that nobody understood, with a sophisticated microservices-based system implemented in TypeScript.

The idea was my own, and it consisted of breaking away from the old workflow of copying and pasting the Java backend project for every new game developed, and instead creating a single common backend for all games with the following components:

A flow orchestrator capable of handling most of the mechanics of an online Slot game, as well as adding new mechanics without needing to modify existing ones.

• A configuration broker that allows retrieving a game’s configuration given its ID and jurisdiction.
• An interface to create, read, update, and delete configurations.
• A simulator to ensure that the games had the correct math.
• An API that acts as a client to an external service providing wallet functionality.
• A Vue-based simulator interface so the mathematics department could use it.

And many other things I built over the course of 10 months, working 10 hours a day, many weekends included. My boss’s exact words were: “This project, as a consultancy, could easily be sold for more than half a million”, and it is without a doubt the biggest project I’ve completed to date.
