Hi there, I’m Jason Ball. I grew up by the sea near Halifax, Nova Scotia, and I chased music from an early age, building bands, running a recording studio, and carving out a life on the road. Over the years I have worn many hats—performer, producer, bandleader, accompanist, and studio mentor—always with a DIY mindset and a curiosity for how songs come together in the studio and on stage. Since 2004 I’ve been based in Toronto, performing and recording as Hopeful Monster and producing for other artists. My work has taken me across Canada, the U.K., Europe and the USA, sharing stages with Sufjan Stevens, Rufus Wainwright, Of Montreal and Guided By Voices. I’ve written songs for film and TV, helped CBC Radio 2 with Song Quest 2010, and built a career that blends creative output with behind-the-scenes production, administration, and the many moving parts of running a music business.
