I was born in Liverpool, England, and my first job was at the Empire Theatre as an ASM. My love of music and drums soon drew me into bands on the local scene in the 1970s. I travelled widely across the world, playing drums with a variety of bands and contemporary dance theatres, while also recording and producing music. Since moving to London in 1990 I’ve run a company that delivers music and cultural events and runs a Community Music programme designed to help people engage in creative activities to boost wellbeing. The programme has been recognised by the Guildhall School of Music as part of their international Music For Social Impact project.
During the 2000s I toured nationally and internationally with Bode Lawal’s Sakoba Dance Theatre, playing drumkit alongside Master Drummer Henri GaoBi on djembe and doun doun. I’ve written and produced scripts and plays for BBC Radio and have worked in film, television and on stage. My more recent work includes appearing in the music documentary Pre-Fab! and, in 2023, the Young Vic theatre production The Second Woman, alongside Ruth Wilson, Toby Jones, Idris Elba, Aidan Gillen and Andrew Scott. I created Percy Phillips – Adventures With Electricity, a touring audio/visual presentation about my grandfather, who opened Liverpool’s first recording studio in 1955. In 2018 I produced and released a CD box set and a special edition ten-inch vinyl double album with Speakeasy Recordings, along with a book about Percy Phillips’ life, which had its World Premiere at the Liverpool Beatles Convention.
