paper "Modeling a Vision: Design Technology, and Impact" Exhibit Interpretation
Panel 1: "There seems to be no place where the cultures meet - At the heart of thought and creation we are letting some of our best chances go by default. The clashing point of two subjects, two disciplines, two cultures - of two galaxies, so far as that goes - ought to produce creative chances. In the history of mental activity that has been where some of the breakthrough came." -C.P. Snow, Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution We live in a world separated by boundaries, most of which go unnoticed and unquestioned. These boundaries can be helpful, allowing us to categorize and define the differences between the ambiguity of design and the calculation of science, for example. They can also be limiting. By dividing our world into these separate cultures, such as the arts and the sciences, possibility and actuality, ideals and facts, sustainability and functionality, we destroy the act of creation before it even begins and stop ourselves from reaching further into the limits of innovation. The Center for Design Research exploits the untapped territories of opportunity that lie between disciplines and, in so doing, redefines the role of design education through research and expanded engagement with society. Nothing comes from nothing, and the spark of creativity first requires flint knocking against rock, the friction of wood against wood. Concepts that we assume are unrelated - architecture, technology, business, or cultural forces - when given the opportunity to converge, can spark ideas that evolve into inventive, trailblazing design. Panel 2: In blurring disciplinary boundaries and operating at the intersection of research, learning, and practice, the Center for Design Research at Virginia Tech (CDR) redefines design education beyond the conventions of a typical teaching model. Instead of seeking finite solutions to singular problems, the CDR focuses on identifying needs and opportunities, both locally and globally, and then expanding in an infinite game of thought and action. With this approach, the solution is never absolute, but rather a dialogue, ever-increasing in complexity, between the creation of ideas and the process of externalizing concepts. In 2002, the CDR began as an idea. Now, 20 years later, it has grown from a small team of individuals with backgrounds in architecture, art, building construction, industrial design, landscape architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering, to a network of hundreds of diverse contributors. The CDR provides a forum for faculty and students within the Virginia Tech School of Architecture and School of Design. Opportunities for teaching and learning, while engaging with a network of resources within the university and beyond, are enhanced through industry and corporate partnerships. With ongoing projects drawing both national and international acclaim, the idea behind the Center of Design Research continues to evolve, locked in an infinite dialogue between design and its impact.
