Marissa Viani is a Mexican writer, media artist, videographer and filmmaker based between Paris and Mexico City. After studying literature and philosophy, she began a career in filmmaking and graduated at CCC of Mexico. She furthered her education at L’ENSAD of Paris and at Le Fresnoy - Studio national des Arts Contemporains. As director she has made several fictional, documentary and experimental short films. Her work seeks to create imaginary landscapes inspired by ancestral traditions, sacred text and ancient myths. This involves extensive research and engagement with historical texts, oral traditions, ancient literature, and spiritual practices. Her work delves into her indigenous ancestry and other ancient cultures, exploring their worldviews, cosmologies, and mysticism. She seeks to draw connections between these philosophies and contemporary issues, offering new perspectives of our human nature and spirituality. She has completed residencies at La Cité internationale des Arts in Paris, at Bandits-Mages – Friche culturelle l ́antre-peaux in Bourges, at Coop Vidéo in Montreal, at Cassis Artist residency in Cassis, at Kala Yatra Artist residency in Katmandu and Temenggong Artist-in-Residence in Singapore. Among other distinctions, she was awarded with the Adidas-Border artist grant, the European Media Art Network residency and grant, the Taylor Foundation grant, the Academy of Fine Arts grant, and the Art and Design fellowship of the National fund for Culture and the Arts of Mexico.
