Work Experience

Software Engineer at Mollie
October 31, 2019 - April 30, 2024
Joined Mollie in late 2019 in The Netherlands, initially as the sole full-stack engineer on the Financial Services team, building on Mollie's Merchant Dashboard (React). Pivoted to backend development (PHP), helping migrate Mollie's whole customer base to their newly developed bookkeeping platform. It was the first major functionality moved out of Mollie's monolith, preceding a company-wide effort to shift from on-prem infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform. Contributed to months of refactoring, implementing domain-driven design and hexagonal architecture concepts to successfully decouple monolith domains, enabling smoother transitions to standalone applications. Co-founded the Capital team, building a revenue-based financing product from scratch. Drove features like real-time eligibility checks and quick funding offers, enabling merchants to receive capital in under 24 hours. Spearheaded Capital's frontend development, pioneering the adoption of Mollie's new platform-agnostic component library (React/React Native) and establishing guidelines for web/native code reusability, serving as a blueprint for other teams.
Software Engineer at Medisoft
February 28, 2019 - October 31, 2019
Moved to The Netherlands in early 2019 to join an early-stage startup focused on helping elderly US citizens navigate pharmaceutical program applications. As the sole full-stack engineer in a small three-person dev team, I built their user-facing React application and improved their existing Node.js API. I collaborated closely with the design team to ensure an optimal user experience for individuals with limited web affinity. I also made significant contributions to their Laravel back-office application, utilized by agents for gathering customer data, managing Stripe subscriptions, and handling Salesforce funnels. This experience was a crash course in collaborative work within a highly diverse environment. I honed my skills in stakeholder negotiations in a non-native language and spearheaded refactoring efforts on existing, untested applications.
Software Engineer at Mgcon
December 31, 2014 - November 30, 2018
Started as a contractor, rewriting a Python/jQuery application to PHP, used by the municipality for Google Maps API location pinpointing. This led to a permanent position, building thin backend layers to query massive MSSQL stored procedures and serve data to D3.js dashboards. Convinced leadership to migrate legacy desktop apps to modern web stacks, spearheading development of APIs using Slim Framework and a home-grown ORM (due to MSSQL views and stored procedures compatibility issues), deployed to on-prem infrastructure running Docker (Docker Compose), serving responsive React frontends. Navigated tight tech constraints, including building apps compatible with PHP 5, IIS, and IE 7. This role taught me to gather requirements in complex, unknown domains and emphasized a POC-first approach with stakeholders.
Web Developer at Various Agencies / Freelancing
January 1, 2007 - January 1, 2015
My journey into web development began early, even writing my first SPA in 2003 while in my Computer Science bachelor's program. Writing this basic HTML/JavaScript tool in Notepad quickly evolved into a passion for building dynamic websites. After graduating, I gained diverse web agency experience, co-founding one and freelancing extensively. Over these years, I shipped numerous websites with custom CMS solutions monthly, alongside complex management applications for various industries including car rental, hotels, event ticketing, and e-commerce. This period was a deep dive into an ever-evolving tech landscape, mastering a wide array of frameworks and libraries such as Prototype.js, jQuery, CodeIgniter, MooTools, CakePHP, Zend Framework, Handlebars, Django, Backbone.js, Ruby on Rails, Magento, Knockout.js, Symphony, Angular, Ember.js, Vue.js, and others. The biggest takeaway of all these years: cultivating an enthusiastic, continuous learning mindset.
