Job Description

Divine Purpose Publishing House is seeking creative and collaborative freelance Illustrators for its children’s imprint, DPP Kids. This role involves creating vibrant, diverse, and engaging characters for meaningful, purpose-driven picture books. The position is remote and project-based, ideal for passionate artists who wish to work on transformative storytelling for children.

Requirements

• Experience: Minimum of 3 years illustrating children’s books.
• Portfolio: A strong portfolio of published or personal work (digital or traditional mediums).
• Cultural Diversity: Ability to illustrate characters of various ethnicities and backgrounds.
• Communication: Comfort with deadlines and clear communication throughout the project.
• Feedback: Openness to feedback and collaborative revisions.

Required Qualifications & Skills for Freelance Children’s Book Illustrators

• 1. Illustration Skills Specific to Children’s Literature:
• Proven ability to create engaging illustrations appropriate for children.
• Familiarity with visual storytelling techniques.
• Strong character design and consistency across pages.
• 2. Digital Illustration Proficiency:
• Skilled in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Procreate, or similar tools.
• Ability to format and deliver high-resolution files for print and digital.
• Knowledge of layer management and file naming conventions.
• 3. Understanding of Page Layout & Composition:
• Comfort with standard picture book trim sizes.
• Ability to design for full-page and double-page spreads.
• 4. Revisions & Feedback Collaboration:
• Receptive to feedback and willing to revise as needed.
• Good communication and turnaround times.
• 5. Cultural Sensitivity & Inclusivity:
• Ability to represent diverse backgrounds authentically.
• Awareness of avoiding stereotypes.
• 6. Familiarity with Print Requirements:
• Knowledge about file preparation for platforms like IngramSpark or KDP.
• Understanding of spine width and pagination.
• 7. Time Management & Professionalism:
• Ability to meet deadlines and respond promptly.
• Capability to follow a project timeline from concept to final file delivery.

Preferred but Not Required

• Experience with book formatting tools (e.g., InDesign).
• Previous experience illustrating for a publisher.
• A personal or professional website/portfolio.
• Familiarity with developmental themes in early childhood or elementary education.
