Description

The City of Detroit’s Department of Transportation (DDOT) is currently seeking a Principal Graphic Designer for the DDOT Vehicle Operation Division. Under general supervision, the role involves producing critical information pieces for internal and external audiences, interpreting large volumes of detailed information into clear and accurate materials for various communication, promotional, and advertising tools. The designer will collaborate with a variety of internal parties, including Operations, Maintenance, and Human Resources, to disseminate final products to end-users.

Examples of Duties

The Principal Graphic Designer engages with the planning and operation of transit service, directly involving the creation of materials with minimal translation. Duties include:

• Interpreting raw and draft sketches into finished graphic outputs.
• Creating internal maps for use by transit operations and training staff.
• Designing infographics and various public-facing materials for outreach.
• Creating print and digital signage for bus stops and ad shelters citywide.
• Creating and editing images for the website and documents.
• Creating environmental graphics such as wayfinding signage and vehicle placards.
• Collaborating with Marketing and Service Development staff for outreach materials.
• Conducting on-site visits to collect data and distribute materials.
• Updating and maintaining digital materials for access and archival purposes.
• Applying the Department’s brand across various materials.
• Advising on the creation and refinement of digital information tools.
• Maintaining organized inventory of proofs, edits, markups, and drafts.
• Preparing distribution plans for materials.
• Interfacing with end-users to evaluate the effectiveness of materials.
• Filming, editing, and posting social media content per city policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):

• Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Illustration, Geography or a related field.
• Three years of experience in general layout and graphic design, including two years in technical illustration or geography.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the requirements.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in a design studio setting with exposure to video display units. There are occasional fieldwork components, such as attending meetings and checking proofs at printing establishments.
