Job Description

The Graphic Designer I position is a permanent intermittent role located within the Park Operations/Interpretation and Education divisions in Sacramento or Santa Cruz, California, allowing for teleworking options. This position reports to the State Park Interpreter III and involves creating interpretive media products, including exhibit panels, posters, digital content, and illustrations that convey messages related to watershed protection impacted by illegal cannabis cultivation. The ideal candidate should have skills in scientific illustration, visual accessibility in design, and will collaborate with program staff to enhance public awareness and environmental education.

The selected candidate will also be expected to occasionally travel to project locations around the state.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications as per the Class Specification for GRAPHIC DESIGNER I.

  • Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license is required.

Candidates are required to submit a Statement of Qualifications, which includes:

  • Cover Letter
  • 3-5 visual examples of graphic design work demonstrating experience in scientific illustration, interpretive exhibit panels, and a completed project that showcases skills.
  • A written statement (less than 300 words) on how to create an accessible graphic design project for the general public.

Candidates must provide their degree/transcripts to meet minimum qualifications, and if selected, transcripts will be required prior to appointment. Confidential information must not be included in applications.

Working Conditions

This role involves frequent sitting and prolonged engagement with digital equipment. Occasional travel may be required for fieldwork, which may involve working outdoors under variable weather conditions and carrying equipment up to 20 pounds.
