Job Description

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) IT Custom Application Development Section is seeking to hire a UI UX Designer II. The primary responsibility of this role is to focus on developing standards specific to custom applications within a Microsoft .Net environment to ensure compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. The role will impact both internal and public-facing applications and will establish guidelines for accessibility and mobile-friendly techniques. The position involves translating functional needs into user-friendly designs, conducting accessibility testing, and ensuring consistent and responsive user experiences across various devices and assistive technologies.

Requirements

The candidate must possess the following qualifications:

  • Advanced experience (4+ years) in designing web-based application user interfaces that meet or exceed WCAG 2.1 AA or higher requirements, including compliance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA) Section 508.
  • Advanced experience (4+ years) in front-end web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., Angular).
  • Advanced experience (2+ years) in identifying, documenting, and implementing accessibility, mobile, and usability standards, processes, and guidance within an organization.
  • Experience (4+ years) using accessibility tools and techniques such as Lighthouse, Axe Dev, NVDA, Aria, jaws, and ANDI.
  • Experience in designing user interfaces using tools like Adobe XD and Figma for prototyping, user flows, and wireframes.
  • Proven ability to conduct testing and provide consultation for user interfaces, particularly those requiring accessibility and mobile-friendliness.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the capability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in creating documentation for standards, processes, and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of the Systems Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and best IT practices, Agile methodologies.

Additional Skills

  • Experience working with Microsoft tools such as SharePoint, Teams, and Office Suite.
  • UX certifications or training in UX design and accessibility standards.
  • Experience in data analysis and the use of metrics.
  • Ability to troubleshoot UX issues through research and problem-solving.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum project management methodologies.
  • Critical thinking and creative problem-solving abilities.

Project Details

This position will work closely with the DNR IT Custom Applications Section Supervisor and DNR Application Architect Lead, collaborating with IT sections and development teams. Key responsibilities include documenting and implementing accessibility standards, testing applications for compliance, providing assessments and recommendations, and developing wireframes and prototypes. The designer will need to keep abreast of technological advancements to improve design and testing methodologies.

Additional Information

  • Regular work hours are between 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM, with availability for after-hours deployments as needed.
  • Must provide reliable high-speed internet for remote work.
  • State holidays are unpaid unless part of the work agreement; overtime and weekend differentials are not available.
  • All equipment must be returned at the end of the contract, and costs for any damage during the contract will be the supplier’s responsibility.
