Job Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant to work under the close supervision of Supervisor I in the Office of Audiovisual/Graphics. The student assistant will support the design, production, and coordination of graphic and multimedia materials for District 4 communications, outreach, and audiovisual projects, while developing an understanding of graphic design principles, multimedia production, Caltrans branding, and accessibility standards.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment:
- This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position.
- Employment can be terminated at any time by either party.
- A pre-employment background check may be conducted.
- Candidates must reside and work in California.
Prerequisites:
- Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term at an accredited college or university from the affiliation list.
- Must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine-quarter units for undergraduates; four-semester units or six-quarter units for graduate students.
- Major must match those listed in the job posting.

Work Schedule:
- Flexible workdays and hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM.
- Student employees generally work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours during breaks.
Compensation:
$18.27 – $24.62 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Basic knowledge of graphic design and visual communication.
- Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or similar software.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work well with others and manage multiple tasks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in graphic design or related fields.
- Experience creating graphics for print, web, or social media.
- Interest in emerging design technologies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design and production of graphics for digital media and print.
- Maintain consistency with branding and accessibility standards.
- Support branding and layout for events and outreach campaigns.
- Collaborate with staff to incorporate feedback and meet deadlines.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to sit for extended periods and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and communication using office equipment.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office environment.
