Job Description
Storyshares is seeking a part-time Graphic Designer & Typesetter to dedicate 10-25 hours per week (project-dependent). The role involves applying an eye for typographic balance to pages designed for struggling readers. The ideal candidate will demonstrate attention to detail, creativity, adaptability, initiative, adherence to deadlines, and a passion for the cause. The Graphic Designer will report to the Chief Product Officer and work collaboratively with the team to complete titles. Candidates should be prepared to engage with stories that amplify underrepresented voices and come from various genres, including realism, fantasy, and historical fiction.
Job Responsibilities
Graphic Designer & Typesetter Responsibilities include:
- Cover Formatting: Transfer existing cover art to templates, prepare print-ready files, manage ISBN barcodes, design cohesive covers and spines, and handle miscellaneous layout tasks.
- Interior Formatting: Follow state brand guidelines, pass the “backpack test” for age-appropriate design, typeset per publisher requirements, integrate illustrations and photographs, and format educational materials.
- Web: Collaborate on UI/UX design, create graphics and illustrations for featured pages, and design navigation icons.
Work Hours & Benefits
This is a remote position requiring up to 20 hours a week, with tasks completed according to the candidate’s schedule aligned with deadlines. The starting rate is $30/hour, and the position starts ASAP.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Graphic Design, Communications, or digital arts is a plus.
- Proficiency in InDesign and Canva is required.
- Understanding of PDF formats and color codes.
- High attention to detail across multiple projects.
- Strong typographic knowledge with implementation flexibility.
- Understanding of the target audience (struggling readers) and a willingness to learn.
- Occasional typesetting in languages other than English may be required; knowledge of multilingual fonts is a plus.
- 2-3 years of experience in preparing books for paperback printing is preferred.
