Job Description
Caltech is seeking a part-time temporary Graphic Designer to join the Division of Physics, Mathematics & Astronomy (PMA) team. The candidate must be visually creative, organized, and technically savvy, as they will be responsible for designing and maintaining published materials, newsletters, and digital assets, with a strong emphasis on web design. The Graphic Designer will work closely with PMA faculty and staff and will report to the Division Operations Officer (DOO). Key responsibilities will include creating visual assets for both digital and print formats and ensuring the Division’s visual identity is upheld.
Requirements
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or equivalent.
- 1 year of experience in graphic design.
- Familiarity with web design principles and content management systems (specifically Wagtail, WordPress, Squarespace).
- Proficiency in industry-standard design tools and software (Adobe Creative Suite).
- Strong production skills in Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Familiarity with Mailchimp, PowerPoint, and MS Word.
- Knowledge of user-centered design thinking methodologies and the ability to research the target audience.
- Experience with brand design and management.
- Ability to translate a vision or concept into a variety of platforms, follow creative direction, and conceptualize ideas.
- An understanding of visual storytelling.
- Initiative to do research and problem-solve as well as research new software and/or design concepts.
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing multiple projects.
- Awareness of industry trends in digital and print design.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive web design experience.
