Job Description

The Social Media Manager will play a central role in launching and growing the Center for Educational Outreach’s Instagram and YouTube platforms. This position focuses on implementing storytelling execution and platform stewardship, translating CEO’s existing storytelling strategy into a vibrant, consistent, and human-centered public presence. The role is designed for individuals who are energized by meaningful storytelling and motivated to bring powerful narratives to life, while sharing existing story assets thoughtfully, ethically, and creatively.

Responsibilities include organizing and publishing content, managing editorial workflows and maintaining an editorial calendar, ensuring accessibility standards are met, and shaping a cohesive narrative about the impact of University of Michigan outreach across the state. The Social Media Manager should build an engaging digital community that reflects CEO’s mission and values.

Note: This position is a six-month temporary role, serving 20 hours per week at $25/hr, ending in August with a possibility of extension.

Responsibilities

40% Social Media Platform Launch & Implementation: Implement CEO’s existing social media strategy by launching and managing the Instagram and YouTube platforms.

30% Storytelling Content Curation & Publishing: Curate, prepare, and publish storytelling content drawn from CEO’s extensive archive and ongoing content creation.

20% Editorial Workflow, Accessibility & Permissions Management: Manage editorial workflows ensuring accessibility, approval, and accuracy prior to publication.

10% Engagement Monitoring & Performance Reflection: Monitor platform engagement and performance metrics to inform ongoing content decisions and share insights with the Assistant Director for improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience managing or contributing to professional social media accounts, particularly Instagram and/or YouTube
  • Experience creating Instagram posts, weekly campaigns, building meaningful engagement, and increasing followers
  • Experience uploading YouTube videos, creating descriptions, and reviewing edits
  • Experience with Canva for graphic design projects
  • Experience with project management tools
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated care, discretion, and professionalism with personal stories
  • Respect for the University of Michigan’s mission and values

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience telling human-centered stories in educational, nonprofit, or public service contexts
  • Experience translating large content libraries into new formats
  • Ability to follow established strategy while exercising strong editorial judgment
  • Familiarity with accessibility best practices for social media
  • Interest in educational outreach, college access, or public engagement storytelling

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work are subject to the hiring department’s discretion. Work agreements are reviewed annually and may change at any time.
