Job Description

We are seeking a UI Designer to support a major banking client within Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB). The role involves creating clear, consistent, accessible, and production-ready interfaces for retail banking and wealth journeys across mobile and web, including onboarding, payments, cards, everyday banking, and servicing.

The UI Designer will work in agile, cross-functional squads with Product, UX, Engineering, Design System, Brand, Risk, Compliance, Legal, Privacy, and Information Security teams. The role requires translating customer needs and product objectives into effective digital experiences for a highly regulated, high-trust environment.

  • Design high-quality, brand-consistent interfaces for mobile and web banking journeys.
  • Create high-fidelity screens, user flows, prototypes, and build-ready specifications, primarily using Figma.
  • Use and improve design system components, patterns, and libraries to encourage consistency and reuse.
  • Apply accessibility and inclusive design principles throughout the design process.
  • Collaborate with engineers to validate feasibility, support design QA, and resolve implementation queries.
  • Consider privacy, consent, disclosures, authentication, error handling, and other regulated delivery requirements.
  • Communicate design rationale, risks, trade-offs, and customer outcomes clearly to stakeholders.
  • Work independently on defined problem areas while proactively managing handovers and contributing to squad delivery.

Requirements

Essential

  • Demonstrable UI design experience supported by a strong portfolio showing visual craft and end-to-end design thinking.
  • Advanced Figma skills, including components, variants, auto-layout, prototyping, and organised file structures.
  • Strong understanding of responsive design, visual hierarchy, interaction states, and user interface patterns.
  • Experience using and contributing to design systems and component libraries.
  • Working knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.
  • Experience working in agile, cross-functional teams and managing multiple priorities.

Desirable

  • Experience designing for retail banking, wealth management, or other regulated consumer products.
  • Knowledge of authentication and secure user flows, including step-up authentication, device binding, notifications, and transaction journeys.
  • Basic understanding of front-end development constraints, such as HTML/CSS or native mobile patterns.
  • Experience with design-to-development handover and implementation collaboration.
  • Experience supporting usability testing and iterating designs based on evidence and user feedback.

Additional Information

Typical Deliverables

  • High-fidelity UI designs for key WPB mobile and web journeys.
  • Interactive prototypes for stakeholder alignment and user testing.
  • UI specifications and annotations covering states, errors, content rules, and accessibility requirements.
  • Design QA feedback and implementation checklists.
  • Component and pattern proposals for the design system.

Success Measures

  • Improved customer task completion and reduced friction, errors, and confusion.
  • Consistent and reusable UI aligned with the WPB design system and HSBC brand.
  • Accessibility incorporated by default, with fewer defects identified late in delivery.
  • Efficient design-to-engineering handover and high-quality implementation.
  • Positive stakeholder feedback regarding clarity, collaboration, and delivery speed.

Compensation and Working Arrangements

  • Pay: From $70.00 per hour
  • Expected hours: 40 hours per week
  • Location: Hybrid remote in New York, NY 10001
